DJ Quik At The Key Club - February 1, 2009

There’s two aspects to this image that I feel are important to express.  The first one is the angle.  With the job that I have and the business that I’m in, I get the privilege to attend these concerts and live performances for free and get to be on the stage.  But it comes with the fact that I have to film the performance, so I don’t really get to enjoy the show because I’m too busy trying to get the footage that accurately depicts the energy that the artist is showing onstage.

But on this occasion, I was able to score some free tickets to DJ Quik’s show at the Key Club off of Sunset.  It had been a few years since I had been to a concert just as a fan and not as a job.  I enjoyed the show tremendously.  There were a few quirks and mishaps that happened during the show, but I only recognized them because I’ve been to many of these concerts and I know how a performance is supposed to be run.  The average fan wouldn’t have noticed the things I recognized.  But the show was still outstanding.  The atmosphere was real cool.  The people were all positive.

The second aspect of this photo is the camera that I took the picture with.  I went to this show with someone that had a iPhone.  I asked to let me take a few flicks with it and I took about 15 or so from the angle in the crowd we were at.  This image right here came out really good because of the number of lights that were on stage that were on during this part of the show.  Lighting is an extremely important aspect of photography, no matter what type of camera you use.  Whether it’s a professional Nikon or a disposable Kodak, you can always capture a good image with good lighting, good angles, and a good subject.
